Cable connection Malderen-Tisselt-Mechelen 150 kV

At the end of 2020, Elia commissioned the new underground cable connection (150 kV) between the Malderen, Tisselt and Mechelen high-voltage substations. This happened after two years of work in the municipalities of Londerzeel, Willenbroek, Puurs-Sint-Amands, Kapellen-op-den-Bos and Mechelen. In the future, the new underground cables will replace two overhead high-voltage lines (70kV) in the region. Thanks to the increased voltage level of 150kV, security of supply is guaranteed.

A particular challenge was to ensure the stability of the new road infrastructure. When the construction of the cable connection was completed, 'peat packages' were found in the subsoil of the Beekstraat in Willebroek. Peat packages are a natural phenomenon in which dead plant material accumulates. As a result, road repairs in the Beekstaat must be carried out in an adapted manner.

Taking into account the unfavourable weather conditions and the coming winter, the municipality of Willebroek, Elia and the contractor have decided to postpone the repair work on the road surface until the spring. These were completed in the spring of 2021
