We would like to invite you to the workshop “Solar energy Vietnam: grid integration challenges and opportunities” jointly organized by National University of Civil Engineering (NUCE), Vietnam and KU Leuven, Belgium with the support of Embassy of Belgium-in Hanoi. It will take place on 10th April 2019 between 8:00 – 16:00 at NUCE, Meeting Room on 1st Floor, G3 Building, , 55 Giai Phong Road, Hanoi, Vietnam.
Solar energy harvesting, especially through PV-systems, is booming in Vietnam and it is expected to reach unprecedented levels in the coming years. The incentives introduced by the Government of Vietnam in 2017 have attracted 20 GW of large-scale solar developments and it is predicted that Vietnam will lead these developments in Southeast Asia. However, the concern is that the completion of the new projects may lead to grid overloading and further to suboptimal operation of the PV-installations. Beside the large-scale projects, smaller rooftop installations (PV or hybrid PV/T) are still interesting for the general population, since these will not introduce substantial grid overloading. With respect to environmental concerns, due to population growth, expansion of urbanization, and diminishment of agricultural land, the rural regions (connected or not connected to the national grid) are becoming smaller and the inhabitants want to partially preserve the traditional lifestyle in harmony with the nature. In this context, new innovative solutions, not only technical but also socio-economic, should be found out in order to cope and solve these challenges.
The workshop intends to present and discuss the state-of-the–art and state-of-the-practice in solar harvesting and storage technologies, the grid integration challenges and the related socio-economic aspects in Vietnam and Belgium. The workshop will facilitate the exchange of ideas and solutions, along a broad range of disciplines related to solar energy production, transport, storage and use, and among many different types of stakeholders, from end-users in rural areas, PV-installers, researchers to local governments, businesses and grid operators. Academic and industrial solar energy experts from both countries will present their view on these issues and will share with the audience the best practices and exchange ideas on how cope with the presented challenges and maximize the current opportunities. A practical lecture for students complemented by an interesting quiz will be provided during the afternoon section of the workshop.
